Mills Reef Trust Vineyard
Sited in the famous Gimblett Gravels, on the corner of SH50 and Mere Road, this is our newest vineyard, for which we have great expectations. It is a mere 4 hectares and is chosen for its extremely stony free-draining soils and warm climate, ideal for the Syrah (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) varieties we have planted there. The viticulture is intensive with one metre vine spacings and low trellising to take advantage of heat radiated skyward by the stony soils. Yields are kept extremely low with the aim of ultimate quality grapes and wines. The first tiny crop was taken in 2006 and we expect full yield to be reached by 2010, but even then total production will be limited to a mere 3,000 cases. |
