Tasting Note: This densely coloured and generous Hawke's Bay red was made from close-planted vines in Mills Reef's Mere Road vineyard, in the famous Gimblett Gravels district. The grapes were all hand-harvested, destemmed and fermented in two parcels, one going into stainless steel vats and the other to barrels. The wine was then aged in French oak barriques for 18 months and bottled in early October 2005.
This is a powerful Cabernet Sauvignon with mouthfilling body, highly concentrated flavours of blackcurrants, plums, herbs and spices and a backbone of firm but supple tannins. Enjoyable now, it will flourish with cellaring, gaining even greater complexity.
